DOMINIONS’ VIEWS
Striking Declaration (Rec. 9.0 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 14. New Zealand has been foremost in endorsing the Churchill-Roosevelt declaration. The Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, Prime Minister of flew Zealand, said: “The declaration was a striking and most important document, and will give great satisfaction to Democratic and progressive peoples everywhere. It embodies in brief form the principles for which the British Commonwealth and all our Allies are fighting, and to which the United States is contributing sb notably. In every respect it is worthy of two great Democracies which to-day stand an common ground with a common cause —nothing less than the preservation and furtherance of freedom for all men and all lands, freedom based on essential Democratic rights of self-government, the restoration of sovereignty to the nations temporarily dominated by Nazi and Fascist tyranny, access to raw materails for victors and vanquished and the further objective of improved labour standards, economic advancement and social security without which the Democracy for which we are fighting must degenerate into a hollow sham. The abandonment of the use of force as the aim of war and the disarmament of the aggressor nations as a preliminary to the establishment of a wider permanent system of general security will have the support of that great body of public opinion based on deep conviction and drawing strength froin the moral and spiritual forces of mankind which, in spite of the collapse of the League of Nations, still believes in its fundamental principles as the only hope for the future of the world. The declaration will cordially be welcomed in New Zealand. An Ottawa message says that the Prime Minister, Mr Mackenzie King, said the meeting was bound to have a very important effect on world opinion. It could lead only to even closer relations in future between the British Empire and the United States. The text indicated complete under(Continued in Previous Column)
