DOMESTIC HOSTEL

Work At Stratheona Appreciated Farmers’ Union Assistance Appreciative reference to the good work being carried out at the Stratheona Domestic Training Hostel at Pleasant Point was made by several speakers at the monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday. The following remit was sponsored by the Waimate Branch: “That the Farmers' Union give a sum of money or produce as an appreciation of the good work that is being carried out by the Institution.” After discussion it was decided that the remit -be circulated to the Branches of the Union and that the provincial secretary should receive information in regard to the class of produce which would assist the hostel. In sponsoring the remit Mr A. W. Robinson said the hostel was doing a splendid work, and it was mainly run by the Burnett family. The Waimate branch felt that the work should be assisted by the Union. The president, Mr J. C. Hay, suggested that the remit should be forwarded to the various branches. Mr B. E. Evans said that the hostel was carrying out a valuable work. A meeting of the Board had been attended by several of the employers of the trainees and had expressed satisfaction with their work. He knew that the Board would welcome gifts of produce as a considerable quantity of vegetables was used in providing a three-course dinner for up to 30 Pleasant Point District High School pupils. Mr Evans suggested that perhaps the secretary, Mrs McLeod, could enlighten the Farmers’ Union by attending one of the executive meetings. Mr Struthers said that it was hardly necessary for Mrs McLeod, who was a busy woman, to attend the meeting. It would be more practicable for him to ascertain what produce the hostel required. Mr J. Buchan remarked that the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union and the Women’s Institutes assisted the hostel in regard to produce. Mr D. M. France suggested that the farmers might assist by supplying meat for the hostel. The remit was referred to the branches for favourable consideration.
