POLICE STATION FOR TIMARU
Plans Well Under Way Minister Gives Assurance (F.0.P.R.) WELLINGTON, August 15. It was most unusual for the Leader of the Opposition to say he had no complaints and for a member of the Government to complain, but he was going to do so, said the Rev. Clyde Carr (Lab., Timaru). when the estimates for the Police Department were beingconsidered in the House of Representatives to-day. He hoped that the necessity for a new police station at Timaru had not begn forgotten. When Mr John Bitchener was Minister cf Public Works, he had raised the question and had been told that the Timaru Police Station was next on the list for rebuilding. That was a long time ago, and still nothing had been done. Even though there was a war on the position was so serious that he hoped something- would be done this year. The building was so antiquated, that it was neither suitable for the officers there, nor for the administration of justice. It was actually dangerous to those on the spot.
The Minister in Charge of Police (Hon. P. C. Webb) later assured Mr Carr that the need for a new Police Station at Timaru was fully realised. The plans of the building were well under way and the people of Timaru could rest assured that provision would be made as early as possible.
