Mr H. A. Ostler has been selected to contest the Christchurch South seat for the Communist Party at the general election.
Dr. J. H. Blakelock, formerly of Shanghai, has been appointed medical officer of health for Taranaki in succession to Colonel F. W. W. Dawson. The resignation of Dr. E. L. Fitzgerald, medical superintendent at the Auckland Infirmary, was accepted at a meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board. The resignation will take effect from November 8. Dr. Fitzgerald was appointed superintendent in Match, 1938, following the retirement of the late Dr. C. E.'Maguire. A graduate of Sydney University, Dr. Fitzgerald served with tpe Australian Medical Corps in the Great War and later practised in Australia. He came to New Zealand in 1932 and was in turn superintendent and acting superintendent, of the Pleasant Valley Sanatorium, Otago, and the Wakari Sanatorium, Dunedin. In 1935 and 1936 he was medical officer in the Chatham Islands, and from 1936 until his appointment to the Auckland Infirmary he was in general practice at Brunnerton.
