Returned Soldiers’ Association Financial Position The membership of the Waimate branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association now stands at 132 as against 101 at the corresponding date last year, reported the secretary (Mr d’A. S. Grut) to a meeting of the executive. Mr Grut also reported that the takings at the annual reunion amounted to £l7/5/-, as compared with £l2/10/6 last year, and there was a balance at the Bank of New Zealand of £ll4/13/8 and at the Post Office Savings Bank of £154/6/3. Those present were:— Messrs A. J. Kirby (president),. R Moore, T. McEvoy, Wilson, Jackson, A. E. Lewis, A. Lyall, A. Williams, A. J. Hawke and D. Newall. The emergency committee was empowered to deal with applications for relief. It was decided to interview the widows of thi-e ex-sevicemen to ascertain if they were eligible for grants from the relief fund. Arrangements were made for the social for next-of-kin on Tuesday. The matter of arranging a picture party was held over for three months. It was stated that the theatre management had offered about 100 seats at a reduced rate. Mr Kirby thanked members of the committee for assistance at the reunion. A number of recommendations to improve the function next year were adopted. A resolution was carried approving the suggested alteration in the name of the Association to “New Zealand Returned Services Association.” MINIATURE RIFLES A match between the Morven and Glenavy Miniature Rifle Clubs resulted in a win for Glenavy. REMAINED WITH WOUNDED Advice has been received by Mr and Mrs M. Leonard, of Waimate, from Lieutenant-Colonel J. M. Twhlgg, that their son, Private R. J. Leonard, remained behind in Crete to care for the wounded, “As Commanding Officer of the unit, I was grateful to your son for offering to remain with the wounded and admired him for it.” Lieutenant-Colonel Twhigg writes. “It was in fact typical of the man who had always given of his best in the service of the sick and wounded. He was one of the most popular men in the unit, and his absence from our midst is felt by all. I feel you have nothing to fear about his welfare; he was fit and well when I last saw him ” OVER AN INCH OF RAIN The rainfall in Waimate for 48 hours reached 1.08 inches yesterday morning, and cold sleet showers were exerienced during the day. No serious flooding occurred, but surface water is now plentiful and more rain would cause rivers and streams to rise rapidly. Farmer consider that enough rain has now fallen to. ensure good spring growth. ST. ANDREWS AGRICULTURAL CLUBS The annual meeting of the St Andrews Group of the Boys’ and >~irls Agricultural Club was held at St Andrews on Thursday, when Mr A Ward presided over a fair attendance The report and balance-sheet were 1 presented by the secretary and treasurer, Mr F. R. Wilks, and showed that a successful ”ea. had been experienced. About 74 per cent of completions had beep attained and an improvement in most ca was noticeable. Thanks were extended to the judges. Mr Ward and Mr H. Arden, to the local judges, and all those who had worked during the ar to foster the club movement. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr A. B’ jwn; executive, Messrs Ward, Wilks, and Brown; ".ommittee, all teachers and two persons to be nominated by each school committee.
