FAIRLIE

WEATHER The district has greatly benefited during the last few days by a more or less steady rain. Spring growth is already noticeable, and given a spell of fine conditions an early spring can be looked for. Stock have come through the winter in good condition, and farmers are hopeful of a wool and lamb crop above the average. YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB At the fortnightly meeting of the Young Farmers’ Club, held at Ashwick Flat, Mr D. Lundie presiding, a vote of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mrs C. B. Jones. An instructive address was given by Mr S. P. Bray on afforestation. It was decided that members undertake experimental work on their farms, in the growing of linen flax, turnips, sugar beet, rape, chou moellier, mangolds and pasture seeds. Top dressing will also be experimented with. PERSONAL Messrs E. Braddick and F. Surridge have returned from Christchurch. Seaman Frank Surridge, who has been training on H.M.S, Tamaki, near Auckland, is home on leave before being posted to a naval unit. Seaman Surridge, who is a member of a well-known Fairlie family, is the first district boy to leave for service with the Navy. He will be tendered a farewell next week. Private M. Morton, who is home on leave will be entertained before his return to camp. NURSING EXAMINATIONS Mrs E. J. Robertson has been instructing a class in home nursing at Allandale. Examinations were recently held and the following were successful:—Misses N. McConnell, N. Wareing, P. Wilson, C. Nolan, D. Crampton, D. O’Neill, M. O’Neill, T. O’Connor, S. Macintosh, Mesdames J. O’Neill, W. R. McConnell, T. B. Crampton, F. Crampton and A. Hall. Miss M. Pringle of Fairlie was the examiner. LINEN FLAX FACTORY Men have been engaged for work at the site of the new linen flax factory at Fairlie. It is understood that operations will be commenced at an early date. GOLF The following will represent the Fairlie Golf Club at Geraldine during the week-end. A. H. Gillingham, W. B. Trotter, S. Hatton, J. Macdonald, C. H. Miller, C. F. Reynolds, P. J. Carlton, E. Ridley, W. J. Dick, J. C. Isltt.
