FINE OF £20
FAILURE TO ENROLL A fine of £2O and costs 10/- was imposed on James Howard Goffin, in the Timaru Magistrate’s Court yesterday by Mr H. Morgan, S.M., for failing to register under the National Service Emergency Regulations. Senior-Sergeant D. J. Hewitt said that the accused had been employed by-a farmer for some months. The employer had asked Goffin several times whether be had registered, but had been able to get no satisfaction. The employer had been confined to his bed, so had asked a business man who was attending to his affairs to tackle Goffin. He obtained no satisfaction, so wrote to Wellington, and the prosecution had arisen out of that Inquiry. It was understood that the defendant had enlisted and had been turned down, but that did not relieve him of his obligations. Questioned by the Court Goffin said that he had enlisted 12 months ago. He was then in Walmate, and received notice to appear before the Medical Board. He came to Timaru before the notice was sent out, and so did not receive it until a month after the date of issue. He did not appear before the Board. Asked why he did not enroll, defendant said that he thought the enlistment was sufficient. The defendant was fined as stated above, the Court remarking that the obligation to enroll was not removed by enlistment.
