SLY-GROG SELLING
FINES OF £5O IMPOSED (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 19. Two men pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court this morning to charges of sly-grog selling in the Mount Somers district. They were Leonard Banks Syme, a boarding-house keeper, and Roland Richard Beckley, a miner. Both were fined £5O and costs by Mr E. C. LeVvey, S.M. Mr J. W. M. Dart appeared for both men. Both answered three charges of selling beer at Mount Somers, without a licence to do so, on different dates in May. Detective-Sergeant J. McClung, who prosecuted, said that Syme was a boarding-house keeper at Mount Somers. Complaints had been received about the consumption of liquor in the district, and evidence was obtained that Syme was selling liquor. Purchases of liquor were made from him. Nlneteeen dozen bottles of liquor were lo H nd , ? n his premises and seized. Beckley, said the detective-sergeant, was a miner at Mount Somers. He was a married man with a family. A search revealed 23 dozen hotties of liquor on his premises. Both men acted as agents for two hotels in the district. Thev were first offenders. y
