ALBURY FARMERS' UNION . .A 1 ’ t '? e monthly meeting of the Albury branch of the Farmers’ Union, Mr H. D. Muir presided ever a good attendance of members. A welcome was extended to Messrs Burbourgh and Waters. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mr A. J. Davey in his illness, and wishes for a speedy recovery were expressed. Mr C. V. Leslie outlined proceedings of the annual provinc-al conference. An instructive address on “wool, skins, etc.,” was given by Mr Burbourgh, of Timaru. Dealing with wool, the speaker stressed the importance of proper handling in the shed prior to being sent to stores. Methods of appraisal were also outlined. Proper care and attention to skins, etc., was essential if the farmer wanted to get qualfty skfns. Lack of proper care cost the farming community many hundreds of pounds each year, through nS de ' ng S through misMr Waters, of Fairlie, gave a brief outline of farming activities during the year, and also on prospects for the winter in South Canterbury. Both speakers were accorded a vote of thanks. MACKENZIE SUB-UNION At a special meeting of the Mackenzie Rugby Sub-Union held on Tuesday it was decided to abandon the football competition this season. The sub-union was reluctant to take this step, but owing to the fact that two teams could not be raised it was the only one possible. It was decided to affiliate with the South Canterbury Rugby Union. YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB Two debates were held at a recent meeting of the Fairlie Young Farmers’ Club. The Arst debate, “That freehold tenure of land is preferable to leaseheld tenure” was won by the afflrtn-
ative side, which was led by Mr A. Whatman and supported by Mr D. Stanley. “That the spending of money on sport be curtailed for the duration of the war," was the title of the second debate and the negative side won by a narrow margin. Mr B. O’Neill was the leader and he was supported by Mr J. Williams and Mr C. Stanley. Mr C. Miller judged the debates. An interesting talk on “lime and its effects on the soil” was given by Mr B. Trotter, of Kimbell, at the last meeting, over which Mr D. Lundie presided. Both meetings were well attended.
