A SLIGHT LAG

HOUSING PROGRAMME (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 18. Housing construction was very little behind the programme laid down, said the Minister to Charge of the Housing Department (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) this morning. Actually the delay through shortage of materials had not been what was expected. Auckland had the worst trouble, particularly regarding electrical gear. Through not enough men being available, there was a slight slowing up to construction, but though there were fewer men, they were more skilled. There had been some newspaper criticism of the loss of £2OOO shown to the Housing Department accounts last year, but with the undertaking In the stage it was then, a loss of £2OOO was insignificant. There would not be any £2OOO loss this year. Housing projects in the city will be inspected by Mr Armstrong, who will also look at some areas of land which may be bought.
