“PLAYING TRICKS”
RIVERS IN SOUTH ISLAND (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 18. “The rivers seem to be playing tricks that they never played before.” said the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong), when discussing the flooding at Redcliffs with the Sumner Borough Council this morning. "We have been inspecting flood damage in the last two days,” commented Mr Armstrong, referring to his journey down the South Island Main Trunk works from Blenheim. "There have been floods everywhere, and they have been doing enormous damage. “We were on the West Coast some weeks ago looking at a beautiful big concrete bridge. After the bridge was finished the river changed its mind, and removed the approaches to the bridge. The result was that there were two rivers running then, with the bridge high and dry between them, a quarter of a mile awav on an island.”
