CHINESE DESERTERS
DISLIKED BOMBING OF SHIP (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 18. After Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., had today sentenced two Chinese firemen who had deserted their ship to deportation, the interpreter said that there were extenuating circumstances Mr Stout: There can’t be any extenuating circumstances. They have landed heap without a permit. The interpreter said that while ta English waters, their ship was bombed and raked with machine-gun fire, bringing home to them the danger they were ta. They thought of their families and intended to get back to China as soon as they could. Mr Stout: That is Just what we want them to do. The men, who were located working ta market gardens at Levin, are to be kept in custody until deportation up to a period of six months.
