FATE OF ZAMZAM

U.S. Seeks Information LONDON, May 20. The United States State Department has asked its Embassy in Berlin to obtain full details of the whereabouts of the 142 American passengers missing from the Egyptian ship Zamzam, which was believed to have been lost through enemy action. It is officially announced to Berlin that a German ship rescued the passengers and crew of the Zamzam. The German radio has announced that the crew and passengers of the Zamzam are safe somewhere in occupied territory. It was claimed that the Zamzam carried contraband and was sunk strictly in accordance with the blockade operations. Tire announcer added that the Zamzam carried lorries, cars, and machines for British troops and General de Gaulle’s forces. The Paris radio stated that the Zamzam was. sunk by a mine Official Berlin circles declared that a warship sank the Zamzam in the middle of April after rescuing the passengers and crew who were landed from a German merchantman at a port in Western France. The Berlin spokesman said that United States passengers from the sunken Zamzam were expected to oe released as soon as possible and will be allowed to return to the United States.
