ATTACK FAILS
Nazi Flamethrowers At Tobruk / By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, May 8. The latest news of land operations to Libya states that patrols have been active to the Tobruk and Solium areas. German infantry is consolidating its position in the north-east sector of the outer defences. British artillery dispersed German tanks and drove the infantry back ftom their positions. German infantrymen, with flamethrowers, made an unsuccessful attempt to dislodge Australians from dug-outs and an underground concrete post at Tobruk, reports the correspondent of the British United Press inside the fortress. The alarm was given from a listenin’ Post near the front line and the attackers were driven off by heavy Are from the main defence post. The Australians are full of praise for the British artillery. “The Germans will never get through,” said one Australian. “From the front posts we see truck-load after truck-load of Germans go sky high as they are caught to the accurate Are of the British artillery.” A British communique from Cairo states that to Abyssinia further positions covering the approach from the north to Amba Alagi have been captured and a number of prisoners taken. In all other areas operations are continuing satisfactorily. . Qofidar landing ground was attacked by Free French aircraft and enemy positions in other areas were raided with success.
