WOMEN POLICE
Appointment In New Zealand National Council Pleased Pleasure at the action ol the Government in appointing women police for the whole of the Dominion was expressed by the president (Mrs T. E. Holdgate) at the annual meeting of the South Canterbury branch of the National Council of Women yesterday. The action, she said, gave effect to the remit which had repeatedly been sent through the National Council and other organisations and was very gratifying to all of them. Another remit urging that special measures be taken for the care of shell shocked soldiers on their return had not been well received, Mrs Holdgate added, but they were pleased to have the assurance that such cases were well looked after at Hanmer and the men had every care and attention to Insure their recovery. Annual Report During the year the South Canterbury Council consisted of 11 affiliated societies representing 3661 members, stated the report. The societies and delegates were /—Canterbury Federation of Women's Institutes (Mrs G. A. McDonald), Woodbury Wopien’s Institute (Miss Davis), Mary Raymond District Nurse Committee (Mrs Clissold), S.C. Women Teachers’ Association (Miss Baird), S.C. Branch Trained Nurses’ Association (Miss Lindsay', Women's Christian Temperance Union (Mrs Holdgate), Women’s Division Farmers’ Union (Mrs Evans), St. Mary’s Mothers’ Union (Mrs Williams), St. John’s Mothers’ Union (Mrs Nelson Wright), Young Women’s Christian Association (Mrs Duncan i, Timaru High School Old Girls’ Association (Mrs I-emshed). Associate members Were: Mesdames Hardcastle, Meade, Sowerby, Harvey, Cumberbeaeh and Talbot; Mrs Tweedy was an hon. member and Miss Stubbs a life member.
“During the year, ten meetings had been held, and we have to thank the following speakers for most interesting and instructive talks: Mrs W. G. Tweedy, Mrs Kay-Thompson, Miss Lloyd, Mr P. Watts Rule, Mrs L. S. Nicol, Mrs B. E. Evans, Mr H. G. Naylor.
“The I.C.W. standing committees’ reports on education and housing were also read, and the Dominion president’s report of the Obstetrical Society’s conference in Wellington was presented by Miss Lindsay and carefully studied.
“It was with deep regret that we heard of the resignation of our Dominion president, Mrs Benson, and our Dominion secretary, Miss Sullivan. To our new .Dominion president and secretary. Mrs Mclntosh and. Miss Jamieson, we offer our loyal support. “We record with sorrow the passing of Mrs Miller, who for many years was one of our most loyal and enthusiastic members; and of Miss F. L. Cooper of Christchurch, a former Dominion secretary.
“Our thanks are due to committee and executive members for their loyal sunport during the year, to Mr J. G. Duncan for auditing the books, and to the nress for publicity given. "We close our twelfth year in days of grave peril and anxiety. May we follow the example of our gallant sister ;n Britain, and go forward, steadfast and unafraid.” The statement of receipts and payments snowed that the year commenced with a cash balance of £9/6/-
and closed with a balance in hand of £B/1/8. Officers Elected The election of officers resulted:— President, Mrs T. E. Holdgate; vicepresidents, Mrs Nelson Wright and Mbs M. L. Lindsay; secretarytreasurer, Mrs D. S. Memshed. The president thanked those who had addressed meetings during the year.
