CAROLINE BAY AND ASHBURY PARK

Sir,—Your correspondent “Citizen” has overlooked the fact that I appealed for planning, not immediate construction, and now is the time to plan, not when the boys come home. They will need things ready to be ddne, not only thought of. I did and do ask for that dangerous amalgamation of foot and vehicular traffic in one roadway at the south end of the Bay to be cured, but that part can be done with considerably less expenditure than £2OOO. As regards “B. F.”, I did not mention a “coloured” fountain at all, so "B. F." cannot apparently even read correctly. Clear light playing on clear water is what I have in mind. “Father of Cricketers,” had he read the Mayor’s excellent report of the progress of the reserves under the present Council, would have realised that there has been more progress in the provision of playing fields than under any other Council for years past, and indeed the levelling done at Ashbury Park under this Council has made a first-class cricket ground passible within a reasonable time. So far as I have anything to do with it, a firstclass cricket ground will be provided, if not with the assistance of ‘Fathers of Cricketers’ then despite them, and in the laying out of the grounds and preparation of the wicket, expert guidance will continue to be followed rather than that of correspondents who hide under pen-names and will give the public no indication of their qualifications to advise or criticise.— I am, etc.. P. B. FOOTE. Timaru, May 8. Mr Foote’s proposal as published was: “An ornamental .illuminated fountain set well out towards the sea so that its beauty could be appreciated from Evans Street.”— Editor, “Timaru Herald ”
