FAIRLY SECURE
ELECTRIC POWER SUPPLY (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 7. There was no imminent danger, in his opinion, of a power shortage in the South Island this winter, the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) declared this morning, referring to a suggestion that such a shortage might be likely. It was necessary to exercise care in the use of electricity, he added, owing to the increased use of power generally, and owing to the fact that the supply would remain fairly constant until the new unit ordered for the Waitakl hydro works was in operation. In addition, there was a progressive scheme for the future embracing the Hlghbank and Tekapo supplies. These, when completed, would make the supply fairly secure for a considerable time to come. As far as Dunedin was concerned, a new tunnel had been put in at Waiporl, making for continuity of supply, and Southland was securing power from the Monowal scheme. Coleridge Was working at the fullest capacity possible after the recent bursting of the casing of one turbine. One of the difficulties of the present situation, however, when it was not easy to secure plant overseas, was that demand grew to such an extent that it was not possible to reach a stage where one machine could be kept in reserve as a stand-by.
