LEVELS COUNTY

Monthly Meeting Water For School Baths At the monthly meeting of the Levels County Council yesterday there were present: Messrs T. B. Garrick (chairman), R. W. Munro, J. E. P. Cameron, J. Scott, D. Grant, and R. G. Cleland. Reviewing the financial position of the County, the chairman said that the debit balance at April 2 was £902/3/1. During the month £l5O/5/5 was drawn, making the debit £1052/8/6. Receipts totalled £6lB/15/2. Accounts that day totalled £1920/19/11, leaving a debit balance of £2354/13/3. Referring to the Downlands Scheme, the chairman said that the Council would soon have to find £650, as some farms in the area had been using the water for some time. The Clerk (Mr G. B. Bird) explained that he had received a list of the farms which had already been reticulated. The Department estimated that they would be handling 82,000 acres, and already 19,000 acres had been done. Apparently the Department had used the 19,000 acres and 95 houses as a basis for the amount of £650. The chairman said that the charges had not yet been fixed. Until that was done they could not make any charge. „ , The Clerk: We can’t charge anything until we pass a by-law. At present noone is being asked to pay unless they have a permanent supply for at least six months.

Washdyke School Baths A deputation from the Washdyke School Committee waite on the Council to ask assistance toward the cost of water for the proposed school swimming bath. T.ae deputation pointed out that it was estimated that the baths would require 8000 to 10,000 gallons a week over a period of 16 to 18 weeks. The baths would be only 3 feet 6 inches deep, and would be used purely for teaching the children to swim. There would be no revenue whatever from the use of the baths. The Council decided to approach the Public Works Department and ascertain whether sufficient water would be available and whether it could be provided without a meter.

General , A grant of £l/1/- was made to the funds of the Royal Humane Society. The Pleasant Point Emergency Precautions Committee applied for financial assistance to assist the prosecution of the work, but decision was deferred pending further inquiries.
