HOSPITAL LEVY

Burden On Levels County Members of the Levels County Council yesterday deprecated the continued increase in the hospital levy, which this year has risen from £4216 to £5084, an increase of £B6B. The chairman (Mr T. B. Garrick) said he thought that with the Social Security Regulations the levy would drop. Mr R. W. Munro said that it had gone up and would continue to go up. The hospital was being used much more extensively now than previously. Mr J. Scott: If a man gets a scratch he goes to the hospital, whereas a farmer would grin and bear it. The clerk (Mr G. B. Bird): We have a population of 5000 and we pay £5084, whereas Timaru Borough pays £9210 and has a population of nearly 20,000. The chairman: We have to pass it on to the ratepayers. The clerk: Hospital and harbour levies take up three-fifths of our rate over the whole county. The chairman: We will have to pay it. We can’t do anything about it.
