Jan. 4, 6—Greymouth T.C. The Ring will not be paid up for in the Auckland Cup. Entries for the Wyndham and Southland meetings will close at 5 p.m. today. Old Bill has been given 9.11 in the Manawatu Cup, and it will not be surprising if he is allowed to miss this race, which is run a few days before the Auckland Cup. Black Thread has been asked to concede 81b to Sir Crusoe over six furlongs at Awapuni, Black Thread being allotted 9.11. The Gisborne horse has 8.12 in the Railway Handicap. Following his winning performance at Feilding, Kentucky has been worked the reverse way at Trentham, and will be taken north to contest the Railway Handicap and other sprint events at Ellerslie.

Royevrus will be ridden in the Auckland Cup by H. N. Wiggins, who will be on Bronwen in the Railway. W. J. Broughton will ride Wardress in the Auckland Cup and Lady Tinkle in the Railway.

Trentham looks to have a lien on the Great Northern Foal Stakes this year, with Pay Roll, Par Avion. Foreign Coin, Corn Prince and Erinscourt engaged. It is interesting to note that the only Trentham winner of the race (founded in 1886) is Staghunter, who won thirteen years ago. Sovereign Lady, Muffler, Rue, Pleading, Combat, Mosgiel, King's Toast, and Blazealong have been entered for ths Oamaru meeting but not for Waikouaiti. Strip, Wild Career, Rebel Mate, Peony Rose and Schoolgirl are in the Waikouaiti lists, but are missing at Oamaru. The three topweights, Royal Chief 9.11, Beau Vite 9.6, and Old Bill 9.0 are all to run in the Auckland Cup. The meeting of the two first-named well be a great draw. Beau Vite is preferred at the weights, but he did not come through the Melbourne Cup so well as Royal Chief did through his two-mile task at Riccarton. The secretarial work in connection with the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting was carried out by Mrs Betten (formerly Miss Ivy Duncan), at one time in the office of the S.C.J.C. Mrs Betten will again have charge of the summer fixture at Wlngatui, as Mr L. G. de la Perrelle, will not be in command until the cup meeting.

Following are the nominations for the Auckland Jubilee Trotting Cup, of £l4OO and gold cup valued at £100; limit 4.31; 2 miles.—Ringtrue, Kenworthy, Ned Worthy, Mongolian, Our War, Horsepower, Cruiser, Bold Venture, Josedale Grattan, Parauri, Bayard, Red Flush. Molly Direct, Accountant, Uenuku, Bill B. A North Island paper is responsible for the statement that instead of taking part in the King’s Plate and Clifford Plate on the later days, Royal Chief will contest the principal handicap events. It is not likely that he will be asked to take on Beau Vite in the two weight-for-age races. There is no reason at all why Royal Chief should sidestep any horse, as he is now probably better then ever he has been. An interested spectator at Woodville of the win of Old Bill was his partowner, Mr H. H. Pharazyn, in whose name he races. It was the first time that Mr Pharazyn has been on a New Zealand course for some years, and it must have pleased him to see what a fine horse it is that won the Wellington Centennial Cup for him. Mr Pharazyn had to evacuate his home in the Channel Islands when Germany overran France, and he has just returned from England via Australia. An entry of 38 for the Trial Handicap at the Gore Trotting Club’s meeting gives two fields of 19 each wnen the field is put into divisions. The stake condition of the race will now be put into operation; it provides for the addition of £BO to the stakes. In each division the first horse will receive £ll5, the second £25 and the third £l5. The totalisator will be opened on each division separately. The second division will be race No. 6 on the programme.

Having her first race in the Auckland province, the Jack Potts four-year-old, Betty Boop. gave a taste of her quality by making a one-horse race of it over the deciding stages of the Ohaupo Handicap at Claudelands on Saturday. Within a couple of furlongs she was taken to the front and was always travelling smoothly to win pulling up by four lengths. A hot favourite on the machine, her return straight-out was only slightly better than evens. Betty Boop will be at a restricted price next time she starts. Mr Lindsay G. de la Perrelle, who has been appointed secretary to the Dunedin Jockey Club from almost half a hundred applicants, has proved himself a capable and very courteous official at Winton. For several years he and his brother Mr J. de la Perrelle have conducted the “Winton Record.” Mr J. de la Perrelle was recently appointed secretary to the Winton Trotting Club (on the resignation of Mr H. A. Pierce, and presumably will succeed his brother at the Jockey Club. Mr L. G. de la Perrelle’s pleasant personality is likely to make him popular in Dunedin.

Some experienced Sydney racing men say that they have not seen a more brilliant colt than Yaralla since Heroic won the Breeders’ Plate in 1923. Yaralla is unbeaten. At his only start before the Kirkham Stakes, the first two-year-old race in Sydney, and, with the confirmation of a four-year-old and the breeding of a Cup winner, he may yet prove himself a second Phar Lap. Mr Walker, however, will make no rash boasts about Yaralla, who is the first horse he has raced. He will not even compare him with All Love, the unbeaten filly of the present season. Without making any definite plans, Owner Walker and Trainer F. T. Cush have discussed Yaralla’s future, and Cush was emphatic about the Melbourne Cup. “I don’t think that a three-year-old should run in the Cup, no matter how good he is. The race at two miles is too severe for a young horse,” Cush advised Mr Walker.

DUNEDIN J.C. HANDICAPS Following are the handicaps for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting on December 26:

H. E. Gray has been generally credlted with being the trainer of Silver Quex, whose winning at Whangarei was the subject of an inquiry at the same time as The Dozer’s form was queried. Silver Quex is no longer in Gray’s stable, as she was handed over to R. S. Bagly a week or two ago.

Passbook, the dam of Beaulivre, though in the New Zealand Stud Book, is not in the Australian Stud Book, and it was recently reported that Mr E. C. Harnett, the owner of Beaulivre, was going to apply to have her included. Now comes word that the application has been refused, either for the stud book or its appendix. No explanation for the refusal of the mare’s entry was given. A ridiculous position has now arisen. Sharkie, from whom Passbook descends, was admitted to the New Zealand Stud Book, and although she was not so recognised in Australia, Black Tea, one of her descendants, is in the Australian Stud Book. One of the recent “protective” measures—protecting Australian breeders—was to declare ineligible for classics any horse not in the Stud Book and there was even a suggestion that the ban should apply to weight-for-age races. Passbook will probably be returned to New Zealand to breed. The position will arise that her progeny in the Dominion will be eligible to run in the Australian Derbies, Oaks or St. Legers, whereas if she produced foals in Australia they would be ineligible for those races.”
