“STERN ATTITUDE”

Japanese Watch On U.S. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received August 16, 10.35 p.m.) TOKIO. -xugust 16. The “Asahi Shimbun” says that the Foreign Office is contemplating the establishment with the South Americas of an economic commission aiming at economic expansion owing to the gradual closing of the European market and the growing trends of the United States economic blockade against J a nan. The “Hochi Shimbun” demanded that the United States garrisons be immediately withdrawn from China. “If the United States takes over British patrol rights in China it will be sowing the seeds of future trouble. Japan must watch the United States with a stern attitude.” It is reported from Shanghai that the Japanese naval spokesman said that the Japanese authorities demand “as a matter of course” the transferrence of the entire British defence sector to Japan. He indicated that the Japanese authorities would not agree to any other settlement. He said he believed that no arrangement of the scheme without the consent of the Japanese authorities was practical.
