Air Raid Warnings Sounded United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received August 16, 7.50 p.m.) -ERNE, August 16. Air raid alarms were sounded at 11.18 p.m. when unidentified foreign aeroplanes flew over Western Switzerland. A second warning at 1.19 lasted 20 minutes. Similar warnings were sounded in other Swiss towns. A Rome communique states that the Royal Air Force again raided Italian objectives. Anti-aircraft guns shot down one ’plane and five members of the crew were killed and the remainder taken prisoner. The raiders caused no material damage. They came from the direction of Switzerland. Japanese to Push Silk Exports The Japanese Government has decided to finance an imperial silk-yam company with a 30.000,000 yen fund through the industrial bank for the purchase of raw silk in an effort to push exports as well as maintain the official price of 1350 yen a bale.
Canadian Naval Officers Arrive The Canadian Naval Ministry announced the arrival in England of a draft of Canadian naval officers for intensive training ijnd ultimate service in the Royal Navy.
