WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

ROSE WILL An exceptionally instructive and interesting afternoon was spent by members and friends, together with a large party of members from Taiko Women’s Institute at the Rose will Women’s Institute on Wednesday last, when the A.C.S. tutor. Miss Robbins, demonstrated the making of a large variety of salads, which met with a ready sale at the conclusion of the lecture. Presiding, was Mrs Robertson, the vice-president, while Mrs E. Hart, assisted by Misses Johnson and Hart, was hostess. In response to a request for gifts in kind for “Stratheona” Training School, members promised to bring parcels to the next meeting. A large number of garments were brought for the Lady Galway hamper, and gifts towards the soldiers’ parcels were also received. From the Disabled Soldiers’ League, came a parcel of novelties for sale, members making several purchases. It was decided that this year’s birthday be celebrated by holding a dance interspersed with musical items. Mrs Robertson’s offer to provide a birthday cake, and Miss Hart’s offer to ice the cake, were gratefully accepted. In the premier bloom competition Mrs E. Hart was placed first, Mrs Bailey second, and Mrs Stevens third. The competition for the best jar of marmalade was also won by Mrs E. Hart, with Mrs A. Hart second and Mr Stevens third. In judging these entries Miss Robbins offered helpful criticism and comment, and also answered many questions on the bottling of vegetables and fruit. Her practical and friendly advice was much appreciated by members who accorded her a vote of thanks.
