COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS’ ASSOCIATION By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, April 8. Addressing delegates to the annual • conference of the United Commercial ; Travellers’ and Warehousemens’ Asj sociation of New Zealand to-day, the I president (Mr W. Hustler Smith), I commented on the present state of I affairs in the Dominion and overseas . and said that industrial problems were preventing Australia and New Zealand from giving 100 per cent assistance to the war effort. He appealed to members ‘ to keep their Association going so that I they could help those who were in ; difficulties as a result of the import | restrictions and other conditions. The Mayor (Mr T. C. A. Hislop), declared the conference open and said he hoped as a result of the conference the Association would be able to lay the foundation of still further activities and that in the days to come members would be fully employed in bringing goods to the people of New Zealand. “Whether you will be able to do that or not I am bothered if I know,” he said. “No doubt we will eventually return to sanity, but whether or not it will be in our time we cannot say.” Mr Smith said that the membership of the Association during 1939 remained I .steady and that indicated that members I had been able to build up reserves ! during the good years. More than i £26,000 had been provided by the acci- ' dent insurance fund, including 12 I major claims of £5OO each to the . dependents of those who had died. ; The annual report showed that the ; membership was as follows: Auckland • 1003, Wellington 1110, Canterbury 542. Otago 404, total 3059. Mr G. H. Christie was elected president. Other officers elected were: Treasurer, Mr H. H. Wauchop; auditor, Mr H. Bicknell; third representative on the Board of Management of the Accident and Sickness Insurance Fund, Mr S. A. Orchard; three members of the Board of Management of the New Zealand Traveller, Messrs S. A. Orchard, G. E. King and R. E. Voller; one member of the Board of Trustees Central Mortuary Benefit Fund, Mr G. E. King.
