NO PERSONAL GAIN

FARMERS AND EXEMPTION By Telegraph—Press Association ASHBURTON. January 29. “We should answer all outside criticism by reaffirming that the Farmers’ Union is r.jt asking for any exemption for our own special gain,’’ said Mr T. V. Wilkinson at the meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Executive of the Fanners’ Union this afternoon, when he said that there had been a good deal said lately to the effect that some farm workers, because they were engaged in a key industry, were exempt from military service. “It should be pointed out that this is not our real policy,’’ sr.id Mr Wilkinson. The president (Mr C. A. Campion) said that in previous resolutions the Union had advocated a national register and the Union had pointed out the need of discrimination in the recruiting o( men engaged in key industries.
