INTREPID SKIPPER How the captain of a torpedoed British ship continued to give orders and encourage his men in spite of the fact that both his legs had been crushed by a heavy box, which was brought down on them by the force of the explosion, was related by a young A.B. when he returned to port, states the Ministry of Information in London. The A.B. described his experience to the chaplain at the Missions to Seamen Institute at an East Coast port. The concussion of the explosion, said the A. 8., brought a heavy box containing lifebelts on to the captain on the bridge, breaking both his legs. Although helpless and in great pain, he carried on giving orders for lowering the boat and urging the men to take no notice of him but to look after themselves. As the ship sank, the captain managed to slide into the water and was picked up. A drifter took him and the rest of the crew ashore.
