Helen Zimmern, who died on March 22, aged 83, was the last survivor of three sisters well known in the world of literature. Educated at Bedford College and at Girton, she was a distinguished classical scholar, and altogether a woman of remarkable intellectual attainments For tfe? last 40 years she nracn time on social and educational work. She had a life-long interest and a firm and deep belief in the greatness of the philosopher Schopenhauer, a study of whose life and philosophy she first published in 1876. Much influenced by Oriental philosophy, Schopenhauer developed and clarified the conception of the universe as unity, and though showing an affinity with the mystics, his passion for the concrete has set the example of testing all speculation by the methods ofiscience. Much of Ms work has been translated and is published by Allen and Unwin.
