RAILWAY FREIGHTS
SIMPLIFIED CLASSIFICATION CONCESSION TO COMMUNITY By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, May 31. An announcement that railway freight charges for general merchandise had been simplified by the abolition of classes A and B was made by the General Manager of Railways (Mr G. H. Mackley) in an address at Victoria University College. Speaking of the action taken by the department to meet new conditions, Mr Mackley said a new and interesting method at least, to railway administration—would be brought into operation soon when the four classifications under which general merchandise had hitherto been charged would be reduced to two.
The higher classes A and B would be eliminated, leaving only the lower classes, C and D. This would mean not only a concession to the community generally, but a desirable simplification of railway tariff. into operation to-morrow, freight When the new scale of tariff comes charges will be slightly lower than before. Under the old system goods which came under the A and B schedule were paid for on the highest scale.
To make a more even distribution costs for A and B articles have been brought down and costs for goods under the C and D schedule have been increased about 10 per cent.
