NOTES ON THE RACING

NOTES CN THE RACING Backers selected Turaki, Master Dingle and Kippen as most likely for the Gore Highweight yesterday. Kippen went out to make the pace but retired three furlongs from home, leaving Counterflight, Our Pal and Grand Finale to dispute the lead. Master Dingle Joined Counterflight and Our Pal in the straight, and after a hard tussle gained the verdict from Counterflight by half a head. Our Pal was a length and a half away just holding off Turaki. Master Dingle's only previous win was in a highweight at Oamaru, and it appears that he is suited by this type of race. He has had several trainers, but is now in T. Hobbs’ stable.

Carrying two pounds overweight, Spendthrift was made a better favourite than Spanish Lad and Atua Rere for the Longford Hack at Gore. Remembo lost a dozen lengths at the start. New Note and Sea Lady made the" running from On Call. Spendthrift and Spanish Lad. and New Note led to the straight from On Call and Adina. On Call forged ahead a furlong from home and held on to win by half a length from Spendthrift. who finished strongly and beat Spanish Lad by the same margin. New Note was a head away. On Call, who raced rather disappointingly at Winton, was one that P. T. Hogan took to Victoria in the spring.

Viscosa and Diosma had most admirers for the Electric Trot at Gore, and when they displaced the pace-

maker, Tracey Lass, with half a mile to go their prospects looked bright. In the straight, however, they were headed by Flash Guy, who went on to win comfortably from Sungauge, which R. W. Townley brought with a late run to beat Diosma. Flash Guy carried nearly three times as much to win as for a place, and actually paid more on the place machine. Galleon 349-315, Wild Career 335-352, Petersham 295-325, and Queen Dorothy 282-335 were all fancied for the Bell Memorial at Gore. McHeath and Wild Career were first away and at the six furlongs the call was McHeath, Petersham, Ocean Singer, Wild Career; Galleon being last. Across the top the order was McHeath, Petersham, Amelita, Wild Career and Ashaway, but Wild Career ran to the front after hitting the straight and won by a length from Amelita, who held off Queen Dorothy by a head. Galleon and Petersham were next. After winning the Riverton Cup and the Awarua Handicap at Invercargill last season, Wild Career did not succeed again until he captured a spring race at Winton last week, but then the little Balboa gelding has now recovered his top form.

Getting an opening on the rails in the Novice Handicap at Gore, Sunny Jean scored the first win in her four seasons’ racing. Gold Robe and Green Locket appeared certain to fight it out until Sunny Jean crept through on the fence and. vigorously ridden, got up to beat Gold Rover by over a length, with Green Locket and Cone Peak next.

Norseman and Sailing Lady failed to get away on terms with the rest of the field in the Croydon Handicap at Gore. Viking gave no trouble and was soon out in front from Moneyless and Peony Rose. The Riverton gelding led Toro Koura, Sailing Lady and Peony Rose to the straight and stalled off a strong challenge from Peony Rose, who came on again to beat Toro Koura for second.

The Gore pacer Central Lad, who paid over two score when he won at Winton last week, returned another big dividend on his home track yesterday when he battled on to win by the narrowest margin from Iron Duke, who was fast overhauling him. Happy King was third and the Christchurch mare Avon fourth.

last year there was a meagre entry and only four runners in the Summer Hack at Gore, but yesterday eleven horses started. The win favourite, Disband, began well behind Chirp and Vanity Queen, but across the top the order was Silkwood, Straightdel, Chirp. Vanity Queen, Atua Rere and Disband, with Master Dingle further back. A wonderful finished ended in Atua Rere, Disband, Master Dingle and Straightdell going across the line with heads separating them and Chirp close up.
