PACIFIC ISLANDS
COLONIAL OFFICE INTEREST SPECIAL VOTE PASSED United press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received February 24, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. February 24 In the House of Commons, the Colonial Secretary (Mr Malcolm Macdonald), referring to the £7500 for Gilbert and Ellice Islands, said the money was required to pay the cost of establishing Colonial Office officials in three islands in the Pacific, hitherto regarded as of little importance, but now brought into prominence in connection with the trans-Pacific air services. Regarding Canton Island, American and British officials were at present on it, in pursuance of the agreement that Britain and America hold the island in joint trust for a period of years. Discussions were proceeding concerning the details of the administration and the carrying out of the trust.
Mr Arthur Henderson hoped New Zealand was being included in the negotiations.
The island might be of considerable strategic importance in the future.
