WORK FOR THE WEEK
FLOWER GARDEN Hollyhock seeds taken from the lowest, first ripening capsules usually give the best results if sown as soon as ripe. They are best sown in freshly prepared soil where they are to flower. Keep all spent blooms removed from dahlia plants. An opportunity should be taken to see that all plants are correctly and legibly labelled, because this is d.fficult to achieve after the plants have been frosted down in the autumn. Rambler roses may be taken from their supports and pruned. The best blooms are always produced from young wood and this should be tied in the best and most prominent places. VEGETABLE GARDEN Old canes should be removed from raspberry plantations. It is better to do so now than to leave the operation until winter. Hoe frequently among all growing crops and clear away rubbish. Dig over all vacant plots, and if not required for immediate cropping sow with lupins or other for digging in as green manure. Herbs such as lavender, thyme and sage used as edgings for paths should be kept trimmed to maintain a tidy appearance. Lift shallots and garlic and spread them out on a dry surface in an airy shed to dry thoroughly before being strung up for the winter. Plant curly kale, cabbage and other greens for winter use. Sow silver beet and prickly spinach. Continue to tie up tomatoes and pinch out the lateral growths. Thin out the foliage to allow the sun to reach the fruit.
