THE FIRST DUKE

The title of duke is the highest rank in the British peerage, next to that of a Royal prince. Edward, the Black Prince, eldest son of Edward 111, who died before his father, was the first English duke. He was created Duke of Cornwall in 1337, at the age of seven. Since that time all Princes of Wales have held the title.
