In an effort to seize the perpetrators of the recent shootings, a force of 800, including 100 men of the East Surrey Regiment, 100 Japanese, 100 Russians, and a detachment of Italian marines participated in a clean up outside of the so-called “Bad Lands,” outside the western district of the International Settlement. Two hundred suspects were arrested, but were released after questioning. The commanders of the Shanghai Japanese military and naval forces called- on the chairman of the Municipal Council and requested his assent to measures to cope with terrorism. Later they called on the commanders of the British and Italian forces and reported their action. A Tokio message reports that the newspaper "Asahi Shibrun” demands the prompt arrest of terrorists; increased representation on the Municipal council and also the fundamental eorganisation of the International Settlement in order to “facilitate the maintenance of law and order.” It added that Japan would take independent action if these demands are rejected. Forty-seven foreigners, including 19 Britishers and 11 Americans arrived at Kiukiang on foot from Ruling. Fortyseven still remain in Ruling, including immovable invalids and an English woman aged 84. The Japanese Foreign Minister (Mr H. Arita), called on Sir Robert Craigie (British Ambassador to Japan), and conveyed an apology for the Shumchun bombing. At least 180 were killed and 250 wounded in a terrific Japanese air raid on Ichang. Tire Chinese version of the Lanchow raid states that all the Chinese aeroplanes are safe and nine Japanese Were shot down.
