DEPARTURE FROM USUAL
To-morrow’s Procession and Sports END OF PHYSICAL FITNESS WEEK The varied activities of Physical Fitness Week will reach their culminating point to-morrow afternoon when representatives of all branches of sport will take part in the monster procession through the town and the sports display at Ashbury Park. In the procession which leaves King George’s Place at 1.45 p.m., will be teams of tennis players, footballers, cricketers, boxers, wrestlers, bowlers, croquet players, swimmers, harriers, boy scouts, and others. Not the least interesting section will comprise the girls inter-house teams in colourful uniforms, and together with the Bands, the whole parade should be a wonderful spectacle of physical fitness and organised athletic talent. After the marching teams will be a series of decorated floats illustrative of the different branches of sport. This alone will be worth seeing, and will be a witness to the enthusiasm and energy of the sports bodies concerned. The committee responsible for the organising of the final day’s activities has arranged that when the sports procession arrives at Ashbury Park at 2.15, the teams will take part in an afternoon's programme of sports displays, relay racing, dancing, novelty events and athletic contests. A Fine Programme The spectators will no doubt be interested in and probably amused at what I is expected to be an epic contest beI tween the members of the Timaru i Borough Council in the “Physical Fit- ■ ness” hike, while the Publicans’ Trot- , ting Stakes (in sulkies) will undoubI tedly provoke a good deal of specula- . tion and excitement. It is understood i that the contestants in both of these I events have “trained on” very »atis- | factorily, and that as a result of recent I trials all are full of confidence. The ' Social Security Dash (also in sulkies) I business men’s hop, step and jump, the > Diggers’ Plate for R.S.A. members, and I the Boy Scouts obstacle race all prol mise to be of a highly entertaining I nature while the relay racing among the inter-house girls’ teams, men's i sports, club’s teams and women’s sports clubs’ teams hould arouse enthusiasm. A spectacular and always popular event will be the maze march by the combined intes-house girls, while the display of national and country dancing. which has been organised on a ! grand scale, should appeal to all spec- ! tators. During the course of the after- | noon there will be a display of wrest- ! ling and boxing by leading exponents and a series of gymnastic “stunts” by | members of the Y.M.C.A. The amaI teur athletic champions will give exhii bitions of javelin throwing and hurdi ling. The comprehensive nature of the ’ programme and the enthusiasm which is being shown by’ the participants j would indicate that on this occasion I the people of Timaru will be able to j enjoy an outstanding exhibition of ! athletic prowess and physical fitness. I This finale to a successful physical 1 fitness week is confidently expected to : draw a record crowd of spectators to I Ashbury Park.
