SIX NEW RECORDS

Centre Championship Carnival R. Henry Outstanding ' Six records were broken at the South I Canterbury Centre's championship | carnival at the Century Baths last | night. Many of the events were I keenly contested and the swimming im- | proved on the standard set last year I when the first championship meeting was held. Conditions were good and I the large crowd appreciated the organisation that allowed no long pauses to occur between events. The outstanding performer of the evening was R. Henry in the junior boys’ class. In the 75 yards breaststroke he had only one opponent, whom he beat by 10 yards and he reduced the time of 70 4-ssecs set last year to 63secs, which is well up to New Zealand standard. In the 100 yards freestyle he again broke the record, reducing last year's time of 78 l-ssecs to 72secs. Other records that were improved were in the 50 yards men’s freestyle. in which D. J. Shanahan recorded 27secs compared with 28secs. in the intermediate girls’ 100 yards freestyle in which Miss O. Wilson recorded 80 1-5 secs (previous time 84secs), the intermediate boys’ 100 yards in which J. Drummond recorded 67 2-ssec.s (68 4-5 secs) and the intermediate girls’ 75 yards breaststroke in which N. Manning cut l-ssec off her own time of 69 l-ssecs. McPherson, winner of the junior dive, was outstanding in his class. Results:— Senior Men 100 Yards Backstroke (holder S. A. Fogg, time 81secs): S. A. Fogg (O.B.) 1 Time 85secs.
