ESK VALLEY Mrs Bishop presided over the November meeting of the Esk Valley Institute. Mrs W. E. Mills, group convener, explained the importance of members attending the meeting at Makikihi to form a new Federation. Delegates were appointed to attend this and the group meeting at St. Andrews at the end of the month. It was unanimously decided to send a donation of 10/- for the Makogai leper fund. The president thanked the members for their help at the recent birthday party and the secretary (Mrs L. Mills) read a financial statement. A letter from the Pareora Institute was read congratulating Esk Valley Institute on their recent success in the South Canterbury Drama Festival. Miss G. Sauer delegate to the halfyearly meeting at Waimate gave a comprehensive report and was accorded a vote of thanks. After afternoon tea served by the hostesses Misses M. Toohey and Jean Pye. Members spent a busy afternoon in the Institution Memorial Garden, preparing it for a summer display. Results of competitions judged by Mrs and Miss Mills were as follows.— Premier bloom: Mrs Bishop (tulip) 1, Miss Toohey (arum liliy) 2, Mrs Morrison and Miss Roberts (anemone) equal 3. Junior: Miss Jean Pye (cineraria) 1. Jar of flowers: Mrs Bishop 1, Miss Sauer 2. Junior: Miss Jean Pye 1. Bran biscuits: Mrs Bishop 1, Miss M. Toohey 2, Miss Sauer 3. Junior: Miss Jean Pye 1. Handkerchief: Miss G. Sauer 1. Junior: Miss Jean Pye 1. ARUNDEL The monthly meeting of the Arundel Women’s Institute, was held in the Howard Hall when there was a good attendance. Mrs J. Acland was in the chair. A letter of thanks for the donation to the Makogai Leper station was received. The secretary was instructed to write a letter of sympathy to Mrs J. Brown. Arrangements were made to hold a Christmas party early in December. Mrs Johnston gave a report on the Waimate Council meeting and was accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs Wooding gave an outline of the International Exhibition she had attended and a sub-committee was elected to arrange the Institute book. Those elected were Mesdames Ambler, McDonald, Wooding, Foden and Pithle. Mrs Broad kindly donated a magazine to be sent to the Arundel Institute in England. An international competition was won by Mrs Black and Miss M. Galletly. The Institute calender and Christmas card were on view. Brisk business was done with the arts and crafts from the disabled soldiers. Competitions resulted.—Frock not to cost more than 7/6, to be worn by the competitors.—Mrs N. Brown 1, Mrs F. Cain 2.
