Two years ago Harold Logan garlanded with flowers and bedecked with ribbons, was farewelled at Addington by a huge crowd of enthusiasts who had been assured that the idol of the trotting track was going into honourable retirement. There was something tragic in his reappearance at the age of sixteen years, in a hopeless attempt to cheat Father Time. The little champion of long ago looked leg-weary and lean and on all sides could be heard expressions of regret that he had not been allowed to enjoy the rest he had so richly earned.

Something of a surprise was sprung yesterday morning when it was announced that L. J. Ellis was to resume riding. G. H. Humphries, who had been steering Defaulter during Ellis’s idleness, was required for Wild Chase, and L.J. was prevailed upon to take the ride on the three-year-old. On this becoming known other mounts were pressed upon the champion jockey.

A year ago Peerless was rated as the Dominion’s best two-year-old, but after the New Zealand Cup meeting the Beau Pere filly lost form, and her third in the Derby on Monday marked her first promise of regaining it. In the Oaks she showed further improvement, and probably could have extended her margin of a length over Homily. Homily “ran her race” before the start, but she battled on much more courageously than Disdain, who gave her backers a poor run. Peerless recorded 2.33 3-5, only a tick outside Korokio's Oaks record of 2.33 2-5.

There were the customary inquests after the Trotting Cup, but these were inevitable with an overcrowded field. Some people asserted that Lawn Derby might have won if he had not broken on a bend, but he was too far back at the time and probably left his feet because the pressure was too great. Ironside had been going well when one of his wheels was wrecked by King’s Warrior, but he had been forced to cover a lot of ground. Parisienne got into a bad position early and never appeared likely to get a run. There were some horses that were fairly and squarely beaten. One was the favourite War Buoy, who had a perfect run but could not finish. Another was King’s Play, who was mainly responsible for the McTigue bracket starting second :avourite. He was in a nice position two furlongs from home, but suffered from the same complaint as War Buoyshortness of breath. Reporter, Satir King and Harold Logan were among those boxed in for most of the way, but they did not improve their positions when the field opened up at the finish. Morello was undoubtedly rather fortunate, as he was close up on the inside all the way to the home turn, where ar opening presented itself. Once that happened, the race was over, and - it was run nothing had a chance with him. He had the field strung right cut at the finish, and once more th? Cup was devoid of a final thrill, the only Interest being aroused by Lucky Jack’s late dash in pursuit of Logan Der'j
