FIRE DEPARTMENT

ANGLICAN SYNOD DECISION By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN. November 9. The Anglican Synod of Otago and Southland to-day carried a resolution “that a fire insurance department be established, with the Diocesan Registrar as chief agent, for the control of all fire insurance of the parish and parochial buildings, educational institutions and orphanages within the diocese.” Mr A. H. Allen, who is Mayor of Dunedin, protested against what he described as “an unwarranted interference” with private enterprise, but the proposal was carried by 35 votes to 10. One member of the Synod reminded Mr Allen that the City Corporation conducted a fire department which was considered a valuable asset, and that if he were consistent, he would advocate its abolition.
