FOURTEEN KILLED
JERSEY AIRWAYS’ LOSS FIRST SERIOUS ACCIDENT United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, November 4. Fourteen persons, including a child pas tnger and a man who was working in a field 600 yards from the airport, were killed when a Jersey Airways aeroplane crashed at Jersey after leaving the airport. The machine, a D.H. 86, took off in a thick fog and failed in its attempt to return. The ground victim was struck by the falling aeroplane. Eye-witnesses state that they saw smoke and flames issuing from one engine after the aeroplane took off. The machine suddenly turned and endeavoured to return while enveloped in flames. When it crashed a terrific explosion blew out passengers hundreds of feet away, mutilating them beyond recognition. The pilot was A. G. M. Cary, formerly personal pilot to the Viceroy of India. The Independent Cable Service states that the name of the aeroplane was St. Catherine’s Bay. The machine had almost made the boundary of the airport when it suddenly dived, narrowly missing a hotel and the airport officials. The police raced to the scene and hundreds of people ran from their homes, but It was impossible to approach the aeroplane because of the terrific heat. The father and mother of the child and two other women were among the victims. A business man who was due to catch the aeroplane for London arrived late at the airport just in time to see it crash.
