PETROL FROM COAL
NEW PROCESS DEVISED By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, November 9. Australia is on the verge of successfully producing petrol from coal, according to Mr Henry Luke, a member of the Auckland Harbour Board, who returned by the Wanganella. Mr Luke said a new process of extracting petrol had been devised, and the laboratory tests were most encouragaing. A plant is being erected in Sydney to deal with the product commercially. An influential syndicate is behind the scheme, and it is anticipated that the cost of the production will be about 3d per gallon, which compared favourably with the cost of producing oil from wells. “The recent war scare has made Australia realise the need for better defence,” said Mr Luke, “and the production of petrol will be a wonderful help and encouragement.”
