WAIMATE WEATHER DURING OCTOBER
One Frost Occurs Official Records The total rainfall at Waimate for October was 3.16 inches, the highest fall being 1.1 inches on October 22, according to the returns of the meteorological observer (Mr J. Allen). Rain fell on eight days. A frost of four degrees was recorded on October 11. The average dry bulb thermometer reading was 56.86 degrees and the average wet bulb reading was 50.7 degrees. The average minimum temperature was 50.7 degrees, the highest reading being 78.0 on October 4. The lowest grass minimum reading was 28.0 degrees, the average for the month being 36.5. The range of temperature for the month was 20.85 degrees. Cloud observations show that there was a clear sky on 11 days and an overcast sky on 14 days. The number of hours of sunshine was 165 a daily average of 5.3 jaours. TENNIS DRAW FOR SATURDAY The draw for the third round of the Waihao Sub-Association’s inter-club tennis competitions to be played on Saturday is as follows: — B Grade—Hunter v. Morven at Hunter; Glenavy v. St. Patrick’s at Glenavy; Makikihi v. St. Paul’s at St. Paul’s; Ikawai A v. Ikawai B at Ikawai; Hook v. Willowbridge at Willowbridge; High School v. Waimate at High School. C Grade—Hook v. Waihao Downs B at Hook; St. Patrick’s v. Studholme at St. Patrick’s; Waihao Downs A v. Hunter at Waihao Downs; Makikihi v. Morven at Makikihi. In the North Otago A Grade competition, the Waimate A team is drawn to play Awamoa Bat Waimate. The Waimate B team has a bye.
BENEVOLENT SOCIETY MONTHLY MEETING At the monthly meeting of the Ladies’ Benevolent Society there were present Mesdames E. C. Studholme, E. C. d'Auvergne, A. H. Acheson, F. Akhurst, F. Nash and C. Coventry. Four applications for assistance wire granted. Mesdames Nash and d’Auvergne were appointed visitors for the month. VITAL STATISTICS The vital statistics for the ten months ended October 31, are supplied for the Waimate district by the Registrar (Mr D. M. Webster) as follows (figures for 1937 given in parentheses): Births 108 (104), deaths 53 (57), marriages 48 (43). PERSONAL Miss B. Healy, of Nelson was a recent visitor to Waimate. Mr and Mrs W. Carlton are spending a holiday in North Canterbury. They are expected to return home to-morrow.
