Effect of Measles Epidemic Committee Meets The attendances at the Temuka District High School have been affected by measles, the headmaster, Mr W. L. Harrison reported at the monthly meeting of the school committee on Tuesday night. Mr W. J. Clark presided. Two of the teachers were away from the same cause, the report added. This had reduced the number of teachers to six. Thus it would be seen that the school staff had been working under difficulties. The inspectors had visited the school and also the Watt-Lowry School. The Public Service examinations would commence on November 22 and the matriculation candidadtes would be required to sit in Timaru as there were not sufficient for a centre to be held in Temuka. On Friday week a sports day for athletes would be held in Timaru for which entries had been made. It would not be necessary to close the school for the purpose. The report was adopted. Mr G. A. Davey reported on improvements necessary In the school and after the committee had made an inspection of the building It was decided to ask the Education Board to make provision for the improvements to be carried out as soon as possible. PLUNKET SOCIETY NURSE’S REPORT A letter from the Temuka Borough Council granting permission to hold a shop day was received at the monthly meeting of the Temuka Plunket Society. Mrs L. J. Warelng presided in the absence of the president, Miss G. Brown. A motion of sympathy with Mrs H. J. O’Loughlen in the death of her husband was passed. The Nurse, Miss V. Brown, reported on visits as follows: Visits to Temuka Office 179 (adults 86, babies 65, preschool children 28); Pleasant Point Office 45 (adults 19, babies 16, preschool children 10); town homes 64 (new cases 14, old cases 50); country homes 169 (new cases 17, old cases 152). There were 12 new cases during the month and there were now 246 cases on the books. Present at the meeting were— Mesdames L. J. Wareing, A. S. Mclnnes, G. Hancox, A. W. Buzan, J. Ritchie, W. S. Harbrow, S. B. Wightman, C. Cornwell, W. F. Evans, H. Wilson, L. Whitehead, E. Brittenden, and L. F. Robins. MAORI SWIMMERS Swimmers from the Arowhenua Maori Pa met members of the Temuka Swimming Club on Tuesday night to discuss the proposal to send a team to the Maori championships which are to be held in Dunedin in February. Mr T. H. Paikl said the Maori swimmers were very keen to send a team, and would be willing to make an effort to raise funds if the Swimming Club would promise its asisstance. After discussion it was decided to notify the Otago Swimming Centre, which is running the championships, that the Arowhenua Maoris were considering competing and asking for full particulars. SCHOOL FOR OFFICERS Mrs A. G. Brown and Miss Davis of the South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes visited Temuka early this week to conduct a school for officers. Members from the Temuka, Arowhenua, Milford, Winchester, Seadown and Rangitata Institutes attended. The visitors were welcomed by Mrs W. F. Evans who expressed appreciation of their action in coming to Temuka. After the meeting Mrs Brooklands thanked Mrs Brown and Miss Davis for their helpful advice. LABOUR SOCIAL There was a large attendance at the fortnightly social of the Temuka Branch of the New Zealand Labour Party held in the Labour Hall on Tuesday night. Winners at cards were Mesdames Woodley, T. King and B. King, and Messrs G. Fisher, A. Preddy, and E. Lee. A competition was won by Mr J. O’Connell, and a Monte Carlo waltz by Mr Southby and Miss Phillip. Music was supplied by a local pianist and Mr W. Seeler was M.C. PERSONAL Sympathy with Mr J. T. Smart in the loss of his daughter was expressed

at the monthly meeting of the committee of the Temuka District High School. Mr and Mrs E. H. Robertson, and Mrs C. M. Bone, Christchurch, are the guests of Mr and Mrs C. R. Barnett, Winchester. Mr J. Deßenzy, Mrs W. J. Moore and Miss M. Opie of Winchester are spending a holiday at Queenstown. BOWLING CLUB Teams to play on Saturday:— F. Smith (s), Murphy, Munro, Marshall; Mclnnes (s), Gourley, Sullivan, Maclachlan; Nichol (s), Keys, Reid, Cameron; Harvey (s), Shillito, Hancox, Beck. Team to play at Geraldine on Saturday:— Edwards (s), Joynt, Longson, Hope; Davis (s), McCallum, Price, Shand; Scrimshaw (s), Meek, Clarke, McGillen; Johanson (s), Strange, Farrel, Johnson. The second round of the rink competition of the Temuka Women’s Bowling Club was held yesterday. The results were: Mesdames G. Hancox, D. Clarke, L. F. Robins and F. Joynt beat Mesdames S. Clinch, G. McCullough, G. Johnston and J. Davis (s) 21—12. Miss Stewart and Mesdames Omnet, E. Blackmore and G. I. Marshall (s) beat Mesdames F. Taylor, T. Scott, T. Winter and G. Fletcher (s) 16—8. Mesdames L. Whitehead, H. Wilson, Miss H. Thomson and Mrs W. L. Harrison (s) beat Mesdames J. J. Cotter, Thistleton, F. Marton, and A. D. Cameron (s) 21—11. Mrs Cain’s rink had a bye.
