Morello Wins Trolling Cup

Decisive Victory

Biggest Crowd For Years

Special to “ The Timaru Herald." CHRISTCHURCH, November 8. Rain which fell in the early hours benefited the Addington track and enclosures, and bright sunshine attracted one of the biggest crowds of recent years. The going was extremely fast and conditions were almost ideal for the hoisting of fast times. The Trotting Cup resulted in a fairly decisive win for Morello, who was less fancied by the public than his stable-mate King’s Play, although it was significant that M. C. McTigue at the last elected to steer the Rey de Oro gelding in preference to the Aucklander. Morello was bred by his owner, Mr A. J. Lawrence, who was for a time in business in Timaru a few years ago. The honours of the race went to Lucky Jack, who overcame the handicap of a big field and finished second, while the Tasmanian, Logan Derby, scored a third which was popular with the big crowd. The favourite, War Buoy, had the run of the race, and was beaten on his merits. Pilot Peter led all the way to score a decisive win in the Dominion Handicap, never putting a foot wrong. Wahnooka and Peggotty put up sterling performances, but had no chance with the greatly improved Peterwah gelding.

RACING REVIEWED Opening Event Gyrate (who had been involved in a road accident) and Esther were withdrawn from the opening event. The popular fancies in a field of fifteen were Sonoma King 847-1142, Royal Romance 768-1113, and Native Huon 644-931. Guy Hugo and Survivor broke at the start, and Great Admiral and Timworthy left their feet after trotting half a furlong. At the completion of two furlongs Native Huon took the lead from Royal Romance, Reward, Gracie Fields, Indolent and Sister Mary; and passing the mile the order was Native Huon, Reward, Romance, Gracie Fields. Commencing the final round Native Huon and Gracie Fields were in comand from Reward, Royal Romance, Guy Hugo, Sister Mary, Indolent and Sonoma King. Three furlongs from home Guy Hugo was challenging Native Huon for the lead, and this pair led to the far turn from Royal Romance, Gracie Fields, Indent, Sister Mary and Tonee. N?.tive Huon, Royal Romance and Tonee led this bunch to the straight and a great finish appeared likely, but Royal Romance trotted right away to gain a hollow victory by five lengths from Tonee, who beat the consistent Indolent by four lengths. Sister Mary was only a head behind the third S horse with Captain Bolt (from 108 behind) next. Resisted All Challenges For the Empire Handicap (4.40 class) backers selected Fine Art 1261-1323, Fremont 631-982 and Wynan-Donor 458-926. Three Bells, Belle Grattan and Treasure Bond compounded at the start, and the two first-named took no serious part in the contest. Fine Art quickly paced to the front, and he led at two furlongs from Moana Tama, Shrewdy and Gold Salute. Passing the stand the first time Fine Art and Gold Salute were setting a fast pace from Moana Tama, Golden Moness, Shrewdie, Ivy Peterson and Lightning Lady. There was little alteration at the mile, which Fine Art passed in 2.13, and with a lap to go Fine Art and Gold Salute. Golden Moness and Moana Tama, Shrewdie and Ivy Peterson, Twenty Grand and Lightning Lady were running in pairs at the head of a bunched field. Turning into the back the last time Fine Art took sole charge again from Gold Salute

and Golden Moness, Moana Tama, Lightning Lady and Twenty Grand. Fremont and Bexley Girl joined this bunch at the top and Bexley Girl followed Fine Art and Gold Salute Into the straight, but the favourite easily resisted all challenges and won easily by three lengths from Bexley Girl, who st: •-■.ggled home a head in front of Fremont, who put in a brilliant run over the last furlong. Treasure Bond came from the back to beat Lightning Lady, Twenty Grand and Moana Tama for fourth. The Cup Although it was reported during the morning that Pot Luck and Plutus might be missing from the Trotting Cup field, all twenty final acceptors ’lined up for the big event of the year. Betting figures on the win and place machines show’ed considerable variation, the final balance indicating War Buoy 1763-2273, King’s Play-Morello 1368-2358, King’s Warrior-Ironside 1240-2457, and Parisienne-Lucky Jack 11J3-2075. Ginger Jack, Bonny Azure, Pot Luck and Rey Spec all broke at the start, Rey Spec soon being a furlong or more behind. War Buoy and Rocks Ahead were first to show, and passing the stand with half a mile completed they were leading Plutus, Morello, Evicus and Ironside. Rocks Ahead ran past the mile (in 2.12) clear of War Buoy and Plutus, Ironside and Morello. With a lap to go the Wyndham mare was in command from Plutus, Ironside, Evicus and War Buoy (four in line), Logan Derby and Morello. Ironside got into difficulties here, being pulled up with a damaged vehicle. As they entered the back stretch Plutus rushed to the front, followed by Evicus, Logan Derby, Rocks Ahead, King’s Play and Morello. At this stage Logan Derby, Lucky Jack and Parisienne were still well back. Plutus piloted Evicus, Logan Derby, King’s Play, War Buoy and Morello across the top, and as they straightened for home the order was Plutus, Logan Derby, King’s Play, Morello, Evicus, War Buoy. Two furlongs from the judge Morello shot through near the rails and quickly had the race won, the Rey de Oro gelding pacing in a comfortable winner by a length and a half from Lucky Jack, who put in a great dash to beat Logan Derby by a length. Ginger Jack and Pot Luck, two who were unlucky at the start, were fourth and fifth, then came King’s Play, War Buoy and Parisienne. Lawn Derby was near the tail of the field until half a mile from home, and broke when making a bid for a forward position. King’s Warrior made a move leaving the straight for the last time, but collided with Ironside and smashed one of his stable-mate’s wheels. Nelson Eddy Impresses With eighteen maiden pacers crowded on the one mark in the Riccarton Stakes, it was inevitable that some of the could not or would not begin correctly. More than half the number were never serious contenders, and In the first half mile the field was strung out over a couple of furlongs. In spite of the hazard, backers rallied round Special Editlon-Taiki 1350-1866, Coquette 634-1095, Wainoni Girl 528-1076, and Shadow Boy 536-850. Axspear, Virginia Girl and Rowi began best, and at the end of half a mile Axspear and Virginia Girl were clear of Rowi, who was followed by Worthy Empress, Nelson Eddy, Repose, and Taikl, the rest having had their chances extinguished. With two furlongs to go Axspear and Virginia Girl were five lengths ahead of Rowi then came Worthy Empress, Nelson Eddy and Taiki. At the turn into the straight Axspear and Virginia Girl looked like having the finish to themselves, but a little further on both were under the whip, and they tired very badly. Nelson Eddy, who had put in two skips, then commenced to overhaul them, and mowing them down in great style the half-brother to Pilot Peter won by three lengths from Axspear, who beat Virginia Girl by a length. Taiki was a moderate fourth, with the rest beaten off. Quality Field The Canterbury Handicap for horses assessed just outside Cup class, attracted a good quality field of eleven, of which the American horse Gallant Knight 1750-2034 was elected favourite from Blair Athol 1170-1948 and AgileVillage Guy 1581. Agile, Village Guy and Southern Smile broke at the start, and Renown’s Best made a slow beginning. Recess was first to show from Gallant Knight, Marsceres, Blair Athol, and Isobel Derby. Soon after reaching the straight Big Author put a foot through one of Isobel Derby’s wheels, and Bingen Palm and Village Guy were interfered with. Gallant Knight and Marsceres led past the stand from Recess and Blair Athol, with Aide de Camp next, and these positions were maintained at the mile (2.12 4-5). Gallant Knight led Marsceres, Recess. Blair Athol, Aide de Camp, Renown’s Best and Village Guy out of the straight

for the last time, the pace having slowed down considerably. There was no material change until the speed was cracked on again two furlongs from home, when Gallant Knight drew away and paced in an easy winner by three lengths from Blair Athol, who beat Marsceres by half a length, with Renown’s Best a head away. Recess was next. Unhoppled Trotters Sea Gift and Bittersweet were withdrawn from the Dominion Handicap, New Zealand’s premier event for unhoppled trotters, and punters put their trust in Captain Bolt-Wahnooka 25533021, Peggotty 2553-3021 and Pilot Peter 1458-1896. Captain Bolt lost thirty yards at the start, and Discord and Aristotle cracked up after going a furlong or two. Pilot Peter began smartly, and on completing half a mile he was leading from Parrish Guide, Flotsam and Reward, Golden Eagle, and Helen’s Bay. He passed the mile in 2.14 attended by Lament, Parrish Guide, Flotsam and Helen’s Bay; and entered the last round about eight lengths in advance of Lament and Helen’s Bay, Golden Eagle, Flotsam and Wahnooka Turning into the back Pilot Peter was fc'lowed by Wahnooka, Lament, Peggotty and Captain Bolt, and racing round the top he was five lengths ahead of Wahnooka, with Peggotty three lengths away and the others beaten off. Pilot Peter was never challenged and trotted in about three lengths to the good of Wahnooka, with Peggotty six lengths away. Aristotle was a poor fourth. Won On the Post Last year’s three-year-old star Horse Power 2307-1983 was made a pronounced favourite for the Victoria Handicap from Donald Dhu 1592-1673, Red Pigeon 748-1587 and Zincali 1611-1313. Zincali and Donald Dhu dwelt slightly at the start. Colonel Grattan was first away, and after going a furlong was attended by Red Ranger (who shot off the mark very rapidly), Nell Grattan and Zincali. Passing the stand the first time, the call was Colonel Grattan, Red Ranger, Nell Grattan, Zincali, Donald Dhu, Red Pigeon. Horse Power was not going kindly and actually was losing ground. Colonel Grattan led Red Ranger, Donald Dhu, Nell Grattan, Red Piggon and Zincali past the mile in 2.18, but despite the slow pace the favourite had made up no leeway. Commencing the final circuit the order was still Colonel Grattan, Red Ranger, Donald Dhu, Nell Grattan, Red Pigeon, Zincali, but two furlongs from the judge Colonel Grattan, Red Ranger and Nell Grattan had the contest to themselves. Colonel Grattan was clear with a furlong to go, but was tiring and with an accurately timed run Red Ranger beat him on the post by a head. Nell Grattan was three lengths away, with Casanova the only other in sight. Red Ranger owed his win very largely to the clever relnsmanship of M. Holmes. Favourite Easily For the sprint race, the Hagley Handicap, the popular fancies were Cantata 3824-2411, Nervie’s Last 2241-2196 and Frisco Boy-Frisco Lady 1081-1919. The bracketed pair dropped their backers by failing to go away, and Big Author also broke at the start. At the end of two furlongs Nervie’s Last and Double Great had taken up the running from Rongomal and Llewellyn’s Pride. Cantata, who had been chopped out on the first turn, quietly settled down in fifth place. Passing the stand Nervie’s Last and Double Great, Rongomai and Llewellyn’s Pride were paired in front of the favourite, with Bingen Palm and Glenross'= next. Half-way down the back stretch Cantata was speeded up and at the far turn she was on terms with Nervie’s Last and Double Great. Two furlongs from home Cantata had assumed command from Nervie’s Last, Glenrossie, Rongomai and Llewellyn’s Pride, Double Great having beat a retreat. Cantata was not seriously tested to win by a couple of lengths from Glenrossie who, under a hard drive, finished three lengths ahead of Nervie’s Last. Llewellyn’s Pride was fourth.
