GERALDINE SWIMMING CLUB

Lack of Public Interest Annual Meeting Adjourned No election of officers took place at the annual meeting of the Geraldine Swimming Club on Thursday evening, that part of the business being adjourned for three weeks because no-one would accept the position of president. The retiring president (Mr J. D. McKechnie) said that he was not seeking re-election and thanked all who had given him support during the past season, especially the women's committee. who had given invaluable assistance at the baths and at the annual carnival. He thought that the club should elect a women’s committee again this year, because a club could not be run successfully without them. Several, were nominated for the position of president, but the persons concerned either declined or were not present at the meeting. Mr John Scott asked that a minute of appreciation of the work of Mr McKeehnie as president should be recorded. He said that the whole of the work in connection with the baths and their control and maintenance was carried on by a few people, and very little interest was taken by the general

public who benefltted. He suggested that the club should continue to press for further assistance from the Educational Department, and from the Council of Physical Welfare and Research. The annual report and balance-sheet which was previously published was adopted, on the motion of Messrs J. Stevenson and J. H. Lewis. The retiring president said that the season had not been a particularly good one because of the wet weather, but a good deal of swimming instruction had been carried out in January, and great interest in life-saving had been stimulated by the visit of Mr J. Breward. The club owed special thanks to the Royal Life Saving Society for arranging Mr Breward’s visit, which had resulted in a number of swimmers being taught to carry out the duties of life savers. Continuing, Mr McKecknie said that Mr Breward had suggested rules for the Stopford Cup for life-saving, and thought that it would be better if It were an open event in which outside clubs could compete. Mr J. Stevenson asked if Mrs Stopford had laid conditions when the cup was given, and the president replied that the cup had been given to be used where it would stimulate most interest. Mr J. Reid said that even if outside clubs competed, the competition for the cup could be held at Geraldine this year. Mr J. Reid was appointed treasurer in place of Mr A. B. Lane, who is leaving for Oamaru. A long discussion, initiated by Mr John Scott, took place on the responsibility for accidents at the baths, but the matter was left for the committee to deal with later. Mr F. W. Morgan suggested that a special appeal should be made for women supporters to attend the adjourned annual meeting. It was agreed that the present committee carry on the work of the club in the meantime. CONDUCT OF FIRE BRIGADE Satisfaction was expressed to the general running of the Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade by Captain T. J. Watts, advisory superintendent of the United Fire Brigades’ Association, when he paid a courtesy visit to Geraldine and Inspected the station and equipment on Thursday. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs C. S.
