CONTROL NEEDED

CAMPING AREA AT TEKAPO "There are few more suitable areas for camping than Lake Tekapo, and it seems that the public body which are in charge of this area should be responsible for the control and safeguarding of the area for the future,” said the engineer (Mr D. Jeune) at yesterday’s meeting of the Mackenzie County Council. Mr Jeune said that in view of the approach of the summer camping period, some consideration should be given to the camping area at Tekapo. Each year there was an increasing amount of debris being left in these areas, and unless some steps were taken to control the area, it would before long not be a very fit and desirable place for such camps. The danger to fires to the plantation and the increasing shortage of available fuel for fires, etc. would no doubt tempt the campers to perhaps start a destructive collection of such firing from the plantation areas. If the Council could see its way to consider some 'orm ol control of the area, he thought it would be advantageous and could be made a paying proposition from the Council’s point of view. The matter was held over till next meeting.
