ST. JOHN’S GUILD
SALE OF WORK OPENS A fine array of articles, the result of many weeks of preparation, was displayed at St. John’s Anglican Church, Highfleld, last night, when the annual sale of work was opened by the Mayor (Mr W. G. Tweedy). The opening night was an unqualified success, and the Ladies’ Guild should feel gratified that their efforts met with such a fine response. In introducing the Mayor the Vicar, the Rev. H. Nelson Wright, explained that the proceeds of the sale were to be devoted to the church building fund. “I can see for St. John’s a very bright future,” said Mr Tweedy, but that result could not be achieved in the present church building. The full value of the church work would not be obtained until St. John’s had a building in keeping with the parish. Last year, said Mr Tweedy, the sale had been a great success, and a substantial amount had been handed to the Vesty for the building fund. He hoped that the Vicar’s appeal would be successful and that the effort of the Guild would contribute towards the objective of having a church which would fulfil the needs of the district. Mr Tweedy declared the sale open and congratulated the ladies on the work they had none. The stall holders were as follows.— Work stall: Mesdames F. Newton, J. wright, A. Jones and J. Palliser. All Saints stall: Mesdames Rattray, Fitzsimmons, Taylor, Southgate, Martin, Mason and Caldwell. Cake Stall: Mesdames W. G. Tweedy and G. LeLlevre. Produce Stall: Mesdames Woolford. Wilson, Davie, Bracefield, F. S. Cave and Nelson Wright. Fancy stall: Mesdames R. Downes, G. Gibb, Misses Turnbull and Gillett. Sweets stall: Mesdames W. Smith, A. W. Watkinson, R. S. Wheeler, and Miss L. Cartwright. Flower stall: Mesdames L. Breen, Blaikie, West and P. C. Vinnell, Mr A. S. Jones. Tea rooms: Mesdames G. Scott, W J. Adams, Messrs Campbell and M. Howden. Bran tub: Sunday School teachers. Valuable work was done througout by the president (Mrs Huddleston) and the secretary (Mrs G. Gibb). The sale will be continued this afternoon and evening. At the latter session a children’s fancy dress party will be held, and a special feature will be the presentation of two ballets which were so successful at the Waimataitai School entertainment. Standards 2 girls will stage a Dutch ballet and Standard 3 girls will give their military ballet.
