GERMANY’S WAR ON JEWS

Callous Treatment Revealed Poland’s Refusal to Negotiate Tragic Conditions On The Frontier United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph —Copyright LONDON, October 28. A new intense drive against the Polish Jews in Germany and Austria has been launched and involves the immediate gaoling or expulsion, without their belongings, of thousands who were summoned from their homes and ordered to “get out,” taking with them only essential food and a minimum of clothing. In Vienna 2000 Jews, arrested in allnight police raids, are being transported to the frontier. In Berlin hundreds were arrested in lightning raids. It is alleged that their presence is illegal, or that their passports are inadequate. The raids were carried out at 5 a.m. in many cities. It is believed that thousands of Polish Jews, who were chiefly rounded up, are to be repatriated to-night. Order to Move The Berlin correspondent of the British United Press understands that all Poles, Jews and non-Jews, have been ordered to attend their consulates to have their passports specially stamped before the end of October. This is being- done under the Polish law of March 31, 1938, covering the re-estab-lishment of citizenship by Poles long resident abroad. Failure to comply with the order might result in loss of citizenship, thus depriving th countries in which these Poles are living of the right to deportation.

All male Jews who have not been ordered to attend the Allens’ Bureau have been rounded up by the police. Those over 75 years of age, invalids, and possessors of emigration tickets have been allowed to leave. Poland’s Reaction Th? Berlin correspondent of “The Times” states that the extent of the expulsion of Polish Jews from Germany and Austria is not yet certain. The Polish Embassy characterises as premature a report that Germany has cancelled their deportation and in the meantime the round-up continues. The ixx.ition seems to be that if Poland ensures that the persons concerned will not become citizenshipless in Germany the deportation orders will be rescinded. The ostensible reason for the expulsions, which it is alleged, are not due to mere anti-Semitism, is that Germany fears that a number of undesirable Polish jews would not receive visas from Poland to enable them to re-enter that country. Therefore, they might become a burden on the Reich.

Seven hundred have been imprisoned in Munich pending a decision from Berlin. The police escorted to the frontier in trains, and many in cattle trucks, 4900 from various towns where they had collected them in vans. They allowed them to retain only 10/- apiece. Many women and children, though not compelled to accompany them, decided to do so. PLIGHT OF REFUGEES HELD UP IN “NO MAN’S LAND” United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright (Receiver October 30, 6.30 p.m.) WARSAW, October 29. No agreement has been reached regarding the German deportation of Polish Jews. Only a few with valid passports crossed the border. Trainloads, almost without food, are shivering and waiting in no-man’s-land which has been formed with only a few

yards separating the frontier posts. Other trains are banked up just beyond the frontier.

It is officially announced that mutual measures for deportation have been suspended Negotiations will be resumed in Warsaw next week.
