TIMARU SHOW

Big Event Opens To-morrow Many Attractions The big event of the year, the Timaru Show, will be held on the showgrounds at Smithfield to-morrow and Saturday. The grounds themselves are in splendid order, and given fine weather tho-fixture should be well up to the high standard which has prevailed over a long period. Numerically the entries are good, but a show can only be judged on quality, not quantity, and in this respect it can be said for certain that the judges in the various sections will experience no light task when they come to make their awards. South Canterbury is one of the leading agricultural and pastoral districts of the Dominion and has a high reputation for the quality of its products. The mirror which reflects those products is the Timaru Show, and those who are keen to know just what the province is capable of producing should make every effort to attend on both days, if possible, for there will be too much to be seen any fully appreciated in one day. From an educational point of view the show has no equal in the direction of displaying the work of the man on the land. All sections of the community find much of mutual interest, and therein lies the success of the fixture. All the essential factors for success are in evidence again this year; all, that is, excepting the weather. Should this prove favourable, the Association will probably enjoy one of the best shows on record. The section which always attracts the greatest attention from farmers, the sheep, is again very well supported. Cattle will also be forward in good numbers, while light horses are almost back to the 1934 standard, so far as numbers are concerned. From what can be learned, the quality should also represent an improvement on last year. The entries in the farm and agricultural produce are well up to standard, while the home industries’ entries are over the 100 mark. The demand for space in the trade section is greater than ever, and the Association has had great difficulty in accommodating all desiring to show. The display of machinery will be one of the finest ever seen on the ground. The sideshow section, also, will be found to be a big improvement on previous years, both from the point of variety and style. Some of the exhibitors have arrived already, but others are coming to-morrow. For the conveninece of the public, trains will run at intervals between Timaru and the Showgrounds. Admission has been fixed at 2/-.
