ROAD SAFETY
ACTION BY MOxOR-CYCLISTS By Telegraph -Press Association WELLINGTON, August 27. The report of the New Zealand AutoCycle Union to be placed before the Road Safety Council on Tuesday indicates that substantial progress has been made in the movement by motor - cyslists to minimise the number of accidents among their number. Support has been given by practically all the North Island clubs, and the combined Canterbury Road Safety Council has accomplished wonderful work in the South Island. The opinion is expressed that in some districts the tests for motor-cycle licenses are inadequate, and it is recommended that the clubs in these centres make representations t. the local authorities for the tightening up of the test. The opinion is also expressed that some form of education Is essential for the new rider, and a scheme is submitted. A system of gx>d riding awards, which has the assistance of the Transport Department, is set out in detail. The report deals also with what is being done in the interests of publicity and education. It is stated that motor-cycle patrols, where established, have been : ndering valuable service. The opinion that drivers and riders responsible for some act of conspicuous courtesy should be rewarded by a letter from the Transport Department and later by'some badge emblem or insignia is expressed in the report. It is suggested that the motor-cycle honorary patrols, a system of which is being gradually extended throughout the Dominion, should make these “good deeds” reports, and If the local road safety committee feels that the “good deed” justified a letter or award a report will be forwarded to the Department for action.
