REFUGEE HOMES NEEDED

DIFFICULT PROBLEM FOR EUROPE BRITISH AND AMERICAN REACTION British Official Wireless (Received March 31, 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY, March 30. Asked in the House of Commons, whether the Government would evolve some scheme to offer Jewish refugees from Austria and similarly placed European countries a new home in a suitable British possession overseas the Colonial Secretary (Mr Ormsby Gore) replied that objections to the policy of the indiscriminate admission of refugees, mentioned by the Home Secretary (Sir Samuel Hoare) recently, applied also to the Colonies. Not Wanted in the Colonies Owing to climatic conditions and the existence of large native populations, there is no territory in the Colonial Empire, were any large scale settlement was practicable. The Governors of a number of colonies had recently been consulted, as to openings for individual cases of refugees, possessing a small amount of capital, but he regretted the replies so far received showed that the openings are likely to be few. In another answer on refugees, the I Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs (Mr R. A. Butler) referred to the United States Government’s proposal, .and said it was hoped for a reply at a very early date. REACTION IN UNITED STATES NAZISM UNDER ATTACK . United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 31, 6.45 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 31. Mr La Guardia, addressing a group of Jewish women repeated the attacks he has already made on the Nazis. “You all come from respectable homes,” he said, “and it is a sad commentary on our present civilisation, that we witness the conditions in Europe to-day.” Coimnenting on President Roosevelt’s refugee aid proposal, he said; “At least there Is one land that says: ‘Shame, shame on your outrages’.” Mr La Guardia bitterly criticised the seizure of Austria.
